The name Hasankeyf once brought to mind caves carved into cliffs above the Tigris, the piers of a medieval bridge and a citadel on the hillside. Today the scene is different. When the Ilısu Dam began holding water, much of the old town disappeared beneath the reservoir, and several monuments were moved to the newly built town of Hasankeyf. If you are planning a trip from Diyarbakır, it helps to know what to expect. This guide covers new Hasankeyf, the relocated monuments, a combined plan with Batman and your transport options from Diyarbakır.

Short answer: Hasankeyf is about 130 km from Diyarbakır by road, and Batman about 110 km. The drive from Diyarbakır to Hasankeyf usually takes around two hours. Because the old town now lies within the Ilısu reservoir, a visit today centres on the culture park, where relocated monuments such as the Zeynel Bey Tomb now stand, and on the new town itself. Combining Hasankeyf and Batman in a single day is a common plan.

What happened to Hasankeyf?

Hasankeyf was a town on the Tigris with thousands of years of settlement history. Rock-cut dwellings, the remains of an Artuqid-era bridge, mosques and tombs made it one of the best-known heritage sites in the region. The Ilısu Dam on the Tigris was planned as one of Turkey’s major energy and irrigation projects, and once it began filling, the lower parts of old Hasankeyf were flooded.

Residents moved to a new settlement built on the opposite bank. As part of the project, several historic structures were moved, some whole and some in blocks, to the new site. The process was debated for years by the public and by heritage experts. Visitors today find this new arrangement rather than the old town.

How was the Zeynel Bey Tomb moved?

The best-known relocated monument is the Zeynel Bey Tomb. This cylindrical Akkoyunlu-era tomb, decorated with glazed tiles, was a symbol of Hasankeyf. It was lifted whole on a special transporter and carried to the new culture park, a move that drew wide attention as a rare case of a historic building relocated in one piece. Other structures followed, and parts of a bathhouse, mosques and a gateway are now displayed together on the same site.

What can you see in the culture park?

The Hasankeyf Culture Park is an open-air area where the relocated structures are grouped together. Although they are now separated from their original setting, you can see the stonework, tile details and inscriptions up close, with information panels around the site. A short visit takes an hour or two. You can also explore the new town’s bazaar and the shore overlooking the reservoir. The higher parts of the old citadel still stand above the water and can be seen from a distance; access to the citadel area has changed over time, so check current information.

What is the reservoir view like?

The Ilısu reservoir forms a wide expanse of water around Hasankeyf, turning the valley where the river once flowed into a still lake. Some visitors find it sad, others simply striking. For photos, early morning and late afternoon give the best light.

What is there to do in Batman?

Batman, east of Diyarbakır, is known as the region’s oil and industrial city. For travellers its main role is its closeness to Hasankeyf, which is a short drive from the Batman city centre. Batman also has an airport, and some travellers fly into one city and out of the other.

If you travel via Silvan, you can stop at the Malabadi Bridge in Diyarbakır’s Silvan district. This historic stone bridge over the Batman River, with its single great arch, is one of the most impressive in the region. The route adds some time, but the stop is worth it.

How to get from Diyarbakır to Hasankeyf

There are two main transport options from Diyarbakır. By public transport, buses and minibuses run from Diyarbakır bus station to Batman, and minibuses continue to Hasankeyf. That means a change, and since timetables vary it can cost you time on a day trip.

By private car, you can leave Diyarbakır in the morning, go straight to Hasankeyf, tour the culture park, stop at Batman or the Malabadi Bridge on the way back and return to Diyarbakır in the evening. The car and driver stay with you all day, and a drop-off at Batman Airport can be built into the same plan.

Transport tips for the trip from Diyarbakır

Timing is everything on a day trip from Diyarbakır to Hasankeyf. With close to four hours of driving there and back, leaving Diyarbakır early lets you see the culture park before the midday heat. If you are flying out of Batman Airport, add your flight time to the booking so the transfer plan works around it and you know how long you can stay in Hasankeyf. Travelling with older relatives or small children? Agree on rest stops in advance. And if you want to stop at the Malabadi Bridge on the way back to Diyarbakır, say so at the start, because it decides the route.

Before you go

  • Summers are very hot and shade is limited; bring a hat and water.
  • Access to the culture park and citadel area can change, so check before you travel.
  • Do not expect the scene in old photographs of Hasankeyf; knowing this in advance helps.
  • For families or groups, choose a Mercedes Vito (3–7 passengers) or a Sprinter (8–13).
