If this is your first flight into Diyarbakır, your first question after landing is probably a simple one: how do I get to my hotel? The good news is that Diyarbakır Airport is very close to the centre of Diyarbakır. All you need to know is which option fits your trip. Below we compare the bus, taxis and private transfers, with separate notes for anyone heading to Sur, Ofis or Kayapınar.
Short answer: Diyarbakır Airport (DIY) is in the Bağlar district, about 7 km from Dağkapı, and the drive to the centre takes 15 to 20 minutes in normal traffic. You can take a municipal bus (lines such as Z2, Z3 and Z7; timetables change), a taxi from the rank, or a pre-booked private transfer. The bus suits light travellers with flexible timing, a taxi works well for one person in daytime, and a private car is the practical choice for late arrivals, groups and hotels inside the old walled city.
How far is Diyarbakır Airport from the city?
Diyarbakır Airport is one of the closest airports to its city centre anywhere in Turkey. The terminal sits on the edge of the Bağlar district, south-west of the centre, roughly 7 km from Dağkapı, the best-known gate in the city walls. In practice that means most travellers reach their hotel within half an hour of landing.
The airfield is shared between civil and military use, and the civilian terminal is run by DHMİ, the state airports authority. The terminal is compact, so you are outside quickly after collecting your bags. That is a good reason to decide on your transport before you land.
What are the options and how do they compare?
There are three main ways to get from Diyarbakır Airport into the city. We have left prices out, because bus and taxi fares change and you should check them with the operator.
| Option | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Municipal bus (Z2, Z3, Z7 etc.) | Light luggage, flexible timing | Timetables and routes change; there may be no late-night service |
| Taxi | One or two people arriving in daytime | Queues after busy flights, fewer cars late at night |
| Private transfer | Late arrivals, families, groups, lots of luggage, hotels inside Sur | Needs booking in advance |
Is the bus worth it?
Several municipal lines call at the airport, Z2, Z3 and Z7 being the best known. The bus is a reasonable choice for backpackers and anyone landing in daytime without a tight schedule. Two things to keep in mind: timetables and routes do change, so check the current information before you fly, and the bus will not drop you at your door. If you are staying inside Sur, you may have a walk over basalt cobbles with your case after you get off.
Is it easy to find a taxi?
There is a taxi rank outside the terminal and during the day you rarely wait long. After a full flight from Istanbul or Ankara, though, the queue can grow, and after midnight there may be fewer cars around. Give the driver the hotel name and the district clearly; Diyarbakır has some similarly named streets and hotels.
When is a private transfer the better choice?
With a private transfer the car and driver are assigned to your flight. The driver waits at arrivals with your name on a sign, tracks the flight and, if you are delayed, simply adjusts to the new time with no extra charge. The price is per vehicle and confirmed at booking, fuel and parking are included, and you pay on the day. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the trip.
It makes the most difference if you land late from Europe, travel with children or elderly relatives, arrive as a family of three or four, or need to get to a meeting on time. Because the price is per car rather than per person, it can also work out well for groups.
Staying in Diyarbakır’s old city of Sur? Read this first
Sur is the historic city inside Diyarbakır’s walls, home to the Great Mosque, Hasan Pasha Han and the Four-Legged Minaret. Staying here is a treat for sightseers, but the street plan has a catch: some boutique hotels and restored mansions cannot be reached by car. Narrow, one-way and largely pedestrian lanes mean vehicles have to stop at certain points.
Find out the nearest drop-off point to your hotel before you travel. If you have booked a private transfer, just add the hotel name in the notes and the driver will work out the best spot in advance and point you to the door. The drop-off can differ for hotels near Dağkapı, Mardinkapı or Urfakapı.
Getting to Ofis and Yenişehir from Diyarbakır Airport
The Ofis area of Yenişehir is one of the city’s business and social hubs, with government offices, business centres, banks, cafés and restaurants. Many business travellers stay or hold meetings here. The distance from the airport is similar to Sur, about 15 to 20 minutes, although evening traffic can build up.
For travellers with a meeting to catch, timing is everything. Add your landing time and the meeting address to your booking and the driver will plan around it. If you need to visit several addresses during the day, an hourly car with driver may suit you better than a one-way transfer.
Diyarbakır Airport to Kayapınar hotels and the bus station
Kayapınar is the newer district growing west of the centre, with wide avenues, shopping malls and chain hotels. Diyarbakır’s main bus station is here too. Allow a few extra minutes for addresses on the far western side.
Most Kayapınar hotels sit on main roads, so cars can pull up right outside and taxis work well. For late arrivals or bigger families, a pre-booked car still saves the wait. If you have a tight connection to a coach, include your departure time when you book.
Planning for a late-night arrival
- Tell your hotel you will arrive late; some small hotels close reception overnight.
- Check your phone battery and mobile data before landing so you can message your driver or hotel.
- Double-check the flight number on your booking, since flight tracking depends on it.
- With children, choose the vehicle by luggage as well as headcount.
Which vehicle should I choose for a Diyarbakır transfer?
A private car suits one or two passengers. The Mercedes Vito takes families and groups of three to seven, the Vito Business carries up to six in a roomier layout, and the Mercedes Sprinter takes eight to thirteen. Larger groups get more than one vehicle. If you have a lot of luggage, going one size up makes life easier.
What about the trip back to Diyarbakır Airport?
The return journey deserves the same planning as your arrival. Diyarbakır Airport is compact, but queues at check-in and security can build before busy morning departures. From Sur, Ofis or Kayapınar the drive itself is short, so the main thing is to leave enough time at the terminal. Many travellers book the return transfer together with the arrival transfer; the pickup time is then set around your departure and there is one less thing to arrange on your last day in Diyarbakır. If plans change, a Diyarbakır transfer can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before the trip.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a taxi take from the airport to the centre?
About 15 to 20 minutes to Dağkapı and Sur in normal traffic, about the same to Ofis, and a few minutes more to western Kayapınar.
Do the airport buses run at night?
Timetables change and there may be no late-night service. If you land late, check the municipality’s current information beforehand or have a backup plan.
Can a car reach my hotel inside Sur?
It depends on the street. Some lanes are closed to cars. Put your hotel name in the booking notes and the driver will find the nearest drop-off point.
When should I book a private transfer?
As soon as your flight is confirmed. Payment is taken on the day and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before, so there is no downside to booking early.
