Diyarbakır Airport to Büyük Kervansaray Hotel Transfer: route notes and planning

The Diyarbakır Airport to Büyük Kervansaray Hotel Transfer is a private, door-to-door ride between Diyarbakır Airport and your address in Büyük Kervansaray Hotel. See Diyarbakır airport transfer for every route from this branch.

Why is it called the Deliller Han?

Hotel Büyük Kervansaray occupies the Deliller Han, an Ottoman caravanserai just inside Mardinkapı. It was built in Hijri 934, that is 1527–28, by Deli Hüsrev Paşa, the second Ottoman governor-general of Diyarbakır, which is why it is also called the Hüsrev Paşa Han. The name comes from the pilgrimage: the guides who led caravans to Mecca and Medina were known as delil, and they lodged here.

Two storeys of arcaded rooms surround a roughly square courtyard with a fountain, with a single-storey stable wing alongside. Its walls, banded in black basalt and paler stone, are a fine example of Diyarbakır masonry.

The han’s role on the pilgrim road reflects Diyarbakır’s place as a crossing point between Anatolia and Mesopotamia. Mardinkapı, as the name says, was the gate facing south toward Mardin, and caravans from the south entered here, so a large inn just inside it made sense.

How does drop-off at the han work?

The Diyarbakır Airport to Büyük Kervansaray Hotel transfer takes around 20 minutes and enters the city from the south, by Mardinkapı. Because the han sits right inside the walls, the car can get fairly close to the door, which is not the case for many hotels in the old city.

Historic buildings do not always have lifts or level floors. If you have heavy luggage or someone with limited mobility, note it in your booking and the driver will help carry bags into the courtyard.

From Mardinkapı down to the Tigris and Hevsel

A few steps from the han you are at Mardinkapı. The Ulu Beden tower on the southwest corner of the walls, with its 1208 reliefs of a double-headed eagle and lions, is a short walk away. The road out of the gate drops into the Tigris valley toward the ten-arched bridge of 1065, a few minutes by car, with the Hevsel Gardens, UNESCO-listed with the walls since 2015, spread along the river.

Near Ulu Beden stands the Yedi Kardeş tower, another inscribed and carved bastion of the same period; you can see both on one walk. In summer go early or late in the day, when the basalt is cooler.

Distance and drive time

About 7 km, usually 20 minutes and up to 25 minutes at busy times. From the airport the car joins Şanlıurfa or Kamışlı Boulevard into town; between Bağlar and Ofis the evening rush can add a few minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Can the car drive into the courtyard of the Deliller Han?

No, the han is a historic building and its entrance is for pedestrians. The car stops at the nearest point and the driver helps carry your bags to the door. The Mardinkapı side is wider than most lanes inside the walls, so pulling up is usually easy.

Can you take us from the han to the Ten-Arched Bridge at sunset?

Yes. The bridge is a few minutes’ drive from Mardinkapı. Book a car with driver for a few hours and it will take you down, wait at viewpoints over the Hevsel Gardens and bring you back to the han. Our city-centre branch arranges these short trips, and the price is settled at booking.

Can I book a child seat for the Büyük Kervansaray Hotel transfer?

Yes — add the child’s age in the booking notes and the car is prepared accordingly.

Can I book the return from Büyük Kervansaray Hotel as well?

Yes — tick “Add return” in the form and both legs are planned in one booking.
